What exactly is home health care and how do you enter this booming market? As the name suggests, home health care is only health care provided to those who need help in their homes. It should not be confusing from basic home care, which does not take into account the trained medical care provided.
In many cases, simple home care involves meeting the daily needs of your loved ones, such as shopping, cleaning, and walking tasks, and is mostly provided by friends or family. Sometimes a colleague is hired to do these tasks. Conversely, home health care is usually provided by a trained professional. This may be a nurse, therapist, or health aide at home.
To become a home health care professional, you will be asked to receive several types of training. The focus of training will usually focus on the safety of the house in terms of patients. You will also receive training on how to deliver professional personal care, and how to use the equipment needed to help those in need at home health care services.
The training needed for various positions can vary from job training to advanced training that requires certification or a degree. The largest organization offering training for home health care certification is the National Association for Home Care and Hospice. They offer various certification programs.
If you are in a management position at this time, you might want to get a certification as a Home Care and Hospice Executive. If you want to receive certification on hand in the training area, you can apply for the National Aide National Care Certification program. No matter what certification you are looking for, you need to recertify every four years.
For home care helpers, the certification process will involve three elements that you must pass. You must pass the Training, Skills Demonstration and Written Exam sections. The training section requires a 75 hour curriculum. This training will give you medical skills to be fully certified.
The Skills Skills section involves demonstrating competence in seventeen various skills. This demonstration of competence comes from observation and documentation. Written Exams are managed by Home Care University. Getting your certification will ensure patients and clients that you provide them with a higher standard of home care assistant.
Whether you want to enter this field in a management position, or as a direct care provider, the home health care industry has an increasing need for professionals in this field. Because of our aging population, that need is expected to continue to increase for the next ten years. Getting your certification in this field will give you the opportunity to compete.
